AKINETON 4mg RETARD Tabletten 100 Stk.(Biperiden)

The drug is a so-called “anticholinergic” drug used to treat Parkinson’s disease.
It affects diseases caused by impaired transmission of excitation between nerves and muscles. This can lead to movement problems (such as problems walking and hand tremors).
These include Parkinson’s disease and symptoms caused by certain medications (especially antipsychotics, drugs used to treat mental illness).
The medicine cannot be taken
if you are allergic to biperiden hydrochloride or any other ingredient of this medicine,
with untreated glaucoma (angle-closure glaucoma),
in case of mechanical narrowing (stenosis) of the gastrointestinal tract,
with expansion of the colon (megacolon),
with intestinal obstruction (ileus).
This medicine must be dosed individually. Always take this medication exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Treatment should be started with the lowest possible dose and then increased to the dose that is most comfortable for you.
Treatment with biperiden hydrochloride is usually gradual. Other dosage forms are available for this purpose.
Typically, you are initially prescribed 2 mg tablets to determine your individual daily requirement for this medication.
Before switching to extended-release tablets, your doctor must first determine the dose that is most beneficial for you based on therapeutic effect and side effects.

Use in adults
Parkinson’s disease:
The average daily dose is 1–2 tablets of extended release (corresponding to 4–8 mg of biperiden hydrochloride).
The maximum daily dose is 3 extended-release tablets (equivalent to 12 mg biperiden hydrochloride) and should not be exceeded.
Drug-induced movement disorders (“extrapyramidal symptoms”):
To treat movement disorders caused by medication, take 1 extended-release tablet per day (equivalent to 4 mg of biperiden hydrochloride) simultaneously with an antipsychotic (a drug for the treatment of psychosis and states of agitation).
The required dose may vary depending on the severity of symptoms. Your doctor will determine your individual needs. If this dose is lower or higher than 4 mg biperiden hydrochloride (= 1 extended-release tablet) per day, 2 mg tablets are available for treatment.
Use in children and adolescents (up to 18 years of age).
Use in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age) is not recommended, since experience with the drug in this age group is limited.
Use in elderly patients
Careful dosing is required. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage for you.
Use in patients with impaired liver or kidney function.
Use in patients with impaired liver or kidney function is not recommended due to the lack of pharmacokinetic data.
Duration of use
The duration of use is determined by the attending physician. It can range from short-term use (for example, for drug-induced movement disorders) to long-term use of medications (for example, for Parkinson’s disease).
Unless life-threatening complications occur, abrupt discontinuation of the drug should be avoided.
Treatment with this drug should be discontinued gradually.

If you took more than you should
Contact your doctor or the nearest hospital immediately as this may be an emergency. Symptoms of overdose include dilation, sluggish pupils, dry mucous membranes, facial flushing, increased cardiac activity, impaired bowel or bladder emptying, fever, agitation, impaired consciousness, states of confusion and delirium. In case of severe poisoning, there is a risk of circulatory and respiratory failure.

If you forget to take it
Do not take a double dose if you have forgotten the previous dose, but continue treatment at the prescribed dose.
If you stop taking it
Under no circumstances should you stop treatment with the drug yourself (see also duration of use).
