Indication
The medicine contains the active ingredient letrozole and belongs to a group of medicines called aromatase inhibitors. The medicine is a hormonal (or “endocrine”) treatment for breast cancer.
What is the medicine used for?
The medicine is used to prevent breast cancer from coming back. It can be used either as the first treatment after breast surgery or after five years of treatment with the drug tamoxifen. The medicine is also used to prevent breast cancer from spreading to other parts of the body in patients with advanced disease.
The medicine should only be used:
in estrogen and/or progesterone receptor positive breast cancer and
only in women after menopause (after menopause, i.e. after menstrual bleeding has finally stopped).
How does the medicine work?
The growth of breast cancer is often stimulated by estrogens (female sex hormones). The medicine reduces the amount of estrogen by inhibiting an enzyme involved in the production of estrogen (the “aromatase”) and can therefore block the growth of breast cancer, which requires estrogen for its growth. As a result, tumor cells stop growing or grow more slowly and/or the spread of tumor cells to other areas of the body is prevented or slowed down.
Monitoring your treatment
You should only use this medicine under close medical supervision. Your doctor will examine you regularly to check whether the treatment is having the desired effect.
The medicine may cause your bones to thin or weaken (osteoporosis) by reducing the amount of estrogen in your body. Therefore, your doctor may measure your bone density (a way to check for osteoporosis) before, during and after treatment.

Contraindication
The medicine must not be taken
if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to letrozole or any other ingredients,
if you still have menstrual bleeding, i.e. if you have not yet gone through menopause,
if you are pregnant,
if you are breastfeeding.
If any of these statements apply to you, please do not take the medicine and tell your doctor.
Dosage
Always take the medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The usual dose is one tablet once a day. It will be easier for you to remember to take the tablet if you take the medicine at the same time every day.
How long does the medicine have to be taken?
Continue taking it daily for as long as your doctor tells you. You may need to take the medicine for months or even years. If you have any questions about how long you should take the medicine, talk to your doctor.
If you take more medicine than you should
If you have taken too much or if someone else accidentally takes your tablets, contact your doctor or hospital immediately for advice. Present your tablet pack there. Medical treatment may be required.
If you forget to take it
If it is almost time to take the next tablet (i.e. in 2 or 3 hours), skip the missed dose and take the next tablet at the scheduled time.
Otherwise, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember and take the next tablet at the normal time.
Do not take a double dose if you forget to take the previous dose.
If you stop taking it
Do not stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to.
Patient information
Particular caution is required when taking the drug
if you suffer from severe kidney disease,
if you suffer from severe liver disease,
if you suffer from osteoporosis or have suffered bone fractures.
If any of these apply to you, tell your doctor. Your doctor will take this into account during your treatment.
Effects of misuse for doping purposes
The use of the drug can lead to positive results in doping tests.
Children and young people (under 18 years of age)
Children and adolescents must not use the medicine.
Elderly people (age 65 and older)
People aged 65 and over can use the medicine at the same dosage as other adults.
Ability to drive and use machines
If you feel dizzy, dizzy, tired, sleepy, or generally unwell, do not drive or operate any tools or machines until you feel comfortable again.
