The drug belongs to the group of oral drugs used to treat diabetes (alpha-glucosidase inhibitors).
The active substance of the drug is obtained biologically. The main site of action of the drug is the small intestine. The active substance is practically not absorbed by the body. The drug delays the absorption of carbohydrates. As a result, glucose obtained from carbohydrates is released more slowly and, accordingly, is more slowly absorbed into the blood. Thus, the medicine reduces the rise in blood sugar levels after meals. By balancing the absorption of sugar from the intestines, fluctuations in blood sugar levels during the day are reduced and blood sugar levels are reduced.
The drug is used as an additional therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus (diabetes mellitus) in combination with a diet.
contraindication
The drug should not be taken
if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to acarbose or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,
in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases associated with significant digestive disorders and malabsorption of food components into the blood (absorption disorders),
with ulcers of the colon, partial intestinal obstruction or in patients prone to intestinal obstruction,
for conditions that may be aggravated by increased gas production in the intestines (for example, a high diaphragm due to bloating [Remheld’s syndrome], large inguinal and diaphragmatic hernias, narrowing and ulcers of the intestines),
with severe renal dysfunction (creatinine clearance less than 25 ml / min),
if you have severe liver dysfunction (such as cirrhosis of the liver).

The required dose will be determined by the attending physician in accordance with your personal needs, since the drug works and is tolerated differently in each case.
Unless otherwise prescribed by a physician, the usual dose is:
1 tablet 3 times a day (corresponds to 150 mg of acarbose per day).
Gradual initiation of treatment has proven effective in reducing gastrointestinal symptoms in some patients:
1 tablet 1-2 times daily (equivalent to 50-100 mg acarbose per day).
Depending on your blood sugar level, your doctor will gradually increase the dose and, if the effect is insufficient, later in the course of treatment until:
2 tablets 3 times a day (equivalent to 300 mg of acarbose per day).
Tablets containing 100 mg of the active ingredient are also available.
If, despite strict adherence to the diet, disturbing symptoms occur, the attending physician should not increase the dose further, but if necessary, reduce it slightly.
Notification:
If your doctor has prescribed other diabetes medicines in addition to this medicine, you must also take them. Under no circumstances should you stop taking any medication or change the prescribed dosage on your own.

If you take more medicine than prescribed

If you overdose, do not drink or eat anything that contains carbohydrates for the next 4-6 hours.
If you forget to take your medicine
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose, continue treatment at the prescribed dose.
